Storm Francis has caused a lot of floods and wind damage in the UK. But just as we thought the bad weather was good to go, Hurricane Laura, which affected the population in Texas and Louisiana, is making its way across the Pacific. By the time it reaches the UK, the hurricane would have turned into Storm Laura.
At the same time, the UK government is pushing advice and campaigns to get fit. We’ve even seen photos of our Prime Minister running with a personal trainer. However, while the PM can probably hire a private gym when the weather takes a turn for the worse, most of us are stuck wondering how to get fit outdoors this autumn. How can you combine the rain with your fitness routine? Here’s a tip: Train with an animal.
Dog owners already have the perfect excuse
For dog owners, Storm Laura or not, you need to take your dog out. On a rainy day, though, you want to make sure your pet is equipped for the weather. Buying a raincoat for your furry friend is a good idea – and let’s be honest, it’ll save your interior decor too – as the autumnal weather approaches. Big breeds are happy running in the rain, so you can pack the weatherproof jacket and the trainers to play together. If you have a small dog, it’s best to stick to short walks as your pet could get tired. Nothing stops you from investing in a dog carrier rucksack if you fancy a long walk. Walking or running in the rain forces your body to burn even more calories to maintain its temperature. It’s an effective workout that beats the gym anytime!
Take on riding lessons
The average horse doesn’t mind a little rain and wind. Of course, they can pick up a cold just like you from poor weather, but there’s nothing wrong with a wet day in moderation. Horse riding is an excellent activity to get fit. First of all, riding doesn’t mean sitting passively on a horse. Riders develop their core strength to maintain their balance in the saddle and keep a solid posture. You also get to burn plenty of calories by looking after your horse. Grooming and brushing your horse will do wonder for your endurance and strength. More riding centres provide equipment, but you can also buy quality weatherproof clothing and footwear; Equi Supermarket is a good address for that. A tip: Invest in a pair of sturdy riding tights if you don’t want your clothes to smell of horses all day!
Treadmill runs with Felix
Is it too wet to go outside? Cat owners can find it hard to stay motivated when the weather goes grey and cold. You can invest in a home treadmill – eBay has got plenty of quality products for less than an annual gym membership. The best way to stay motivated on a treadmill is to use it as a playground with your cat. Cats love to play, and they’ll enjoy a game of chase and catch with you.
As the summer is coming to an end – prematurely, thank you weather – it’s time to consider some essential fitness routine. We’ve been told the population needs to get fit to prepare for the second COVID wave. Finding it hard to get motivated when it’s raining? Hire the best motivating partners you can find: An animal!
