The two things I am best at in life (oh, this should be good for some of my trolls/haters- I’m not going to say being lazy or drinking wine!) I would have to say that my two biggest gifts in life are being able to write/blog (I think I throw together some really nice posts every now and then. I also like that I am super detailed on things and in general I think I write pretty well- even my fanfic/Kayla story that I write for my eyes only that is base on Another world!) I have been known to knock out 10 page reports that I got 100’s on , in as little as 2 days when I was in college!
The second thing that I think that I am pretty good at is Reading. I mean I can knock out a book in a matter of hours and when I’m on full fledged reading mode, I can knock out about 1000+ pages a day which depending on how long a book is usually means about 4 books at a time! I always was lucky with my reading when I was in school because I could read chapters/pages on the way to school on the bus and then everything was fresh in my mind. I also could do re-readings before tests and even re-read the whole book if I need to just before a test!
I guess in their own rights these are crafty sorts of things but I know that in general , people think of crafty things being things that you make/do with your hands or a sewing machine -like quilting, sewing and that sort of thing! I mean there are paper crafts too- like scrapbooking and such -but I am not the most patient person in the world so I think that might be a lot of my problem when it comes down to it!
My mom is what I would consider a crafty sort of woman. I mean she makes quilts, can mend clothes and well anything that you can think of when it comes to a sewing machine you can figure that she can do it! She is always coming up with some sort of project and making her own dish towels or pot holders.. I can’t even begin to name all the stuff that she can do!(she also gardens, cans food, makes her own wine, gardens, and has bees.. and that is just a tip of an iceberg).
She also has at least a dozen sewing machines(this is a conservative estimate, lol) A lot of people don’t realize that there are different types of sewing machines and let me tell you, she is def. a collector! She has everything from ones that you use with your knees, to treadle machines and even modern ones! She even RE DOES THEM if they don’t work! She also has an embroidery machine (and let me tell you that would be the ONLY thing I think that I could get into trying to do and I hope maybe one day to have one!)
I know that when David and I were working at the Salvation Army that someone had threw out a really nice vintage machine at the pizza place where David used to work, and his boss actually frequented the Salvation Army. He brought it there and gave it to our boss Debbie, but she knew that my mom was crafty and wanted her to have it so we packed it away in my car (bench , cabinet and all- not just a machine- this is one of those ones from back in the day that was a serious piece of furniture) and brought it to her. She has it in this huge sewing table now , and it is one of the ones that she uses the most often!
So, have I ever tried to sew….You might wonder. I actually HAVE here and there. I know that some where another that I have a CABBAGE PATCH sewing machine for kids! (and a record player too, I mean can you tell i’m a 80’s child?) A few years back I got this notion to try to learn and make an etsy and sell things but I gave up pretty easily. I think I did stitch together 3 cute little purses. It is funny because my grandma really doesn’t sew either. My mom gets all this sewing stuff from my great grandma so I don’t feel so bad- it is kind of a joke with me and my grandma.
I did, as a child make a blanket with a lady from our church, Charlotte that used to baby sit me … Her daughter Sara and I are still friends on facebook and had fell out of touch. .. the most random of all is she and I went to Appalachian at the same time. Charlotte had the MOST PATIENCE of anyone ever and I think that really helped. I still have that blanket and it might go down as the only thing I ever make 🙂 I have to admit that I don’t think my mom is that patient lol. (I never said that!)
I do hope maybe some day to be able to at least embroider or find some sort of random crafty outlet, but for now i’m content with my writing and reading gifts 🙂
