So I Grew up in the late 80’s and early 90’s and it was a darn great time to grow up in my opinion. I think things were simpler back then- We didn’t have all this technology at our fingertips- which I admit would have been handy on some levels! I mean you had a report to do? You had to *gasp* use an encyclopeida or go to the library and find reference books- or even *more gasping* use a CARD CATALOG. I bet I just named things that some people that will read this will be like is she even speaking English at this point.
When I was in 4th grade myself and another girl got to check email for my teacher on DIAL UP internet at school.Dial up was so great. I can remember waiting for pictures to load all the way-We got it at home when I was in 9th grade I didn’t have my own cell phone until I was a senior -though my mom had one for herself for a little while before I got one- and these were phones without any frills whatsoever- if you accidentally went on the mobile web you’d run up a bill so fast you can’t even imagine.
One thing I loved though back then? We actually had REAL LIFE FRIENDS that we played outside with. You were lucky if you ever got to stay in and just watch tv sometimes or play a game on a super nintendo or something. I know that I didn’t have one, but I got to play with my cousins when I would stay with my grandma in the summer.
My thing back then was BOOKS… and the toys we had were simple things- one of these simple things has transcended time though- and they are actually a whole lot more cooler than they were when I was growing up. What is the toy you ask? LEGOS. I had legos. For the longest time I had them in a ice cream bucket and they had been my Uncle Russell’s- He is only 10 years older than me so it worked out. I also got some in a big huge red bucket one time at one of our relgious beach trip functions. I think other than the part of my mom maybe stepping on them, that they were pretty appealing because they were quiet 🙂 I don’t have my legos anymore though- I gave them all back to Russell when he had his son, (my cousin) Jake!
Legos have REALLY evolved since I was a child- though most things have when you want to think about it! They were around when my uncle was younger (Actually I think they have been around since the 1930’s!)and well they are still around now so they have also transcended time which is pretty awesome.
Now a days though, they are WAY MORE than just simple bricks you can build with- There are the little lego kits and the little lego characters- when I was a child they were just basically bricks- I think you might could get a little tree or something to add in but they weren’t quite what they are today.
I love that kids still love to play with something so simple- and that doesn’t involve so much technology (like I get totally upset when people seemingly let tablets/tv/phones babysit their children) I just think it is a very nice creative outlet for both boys and girls and that they are pretty fun even for someone like myself who has never thought I was very creative or anything like that- I kind of had that feeling when I played with my legos- I actually had never thought about that right now ,so that was a pretty cool thing to realize! I really think it is a good thing to let
Of course like I say, there are totally more options to be creative with now and that even includes Lego Advent Calendars! I mean how cool is that? Oh and LEGO movies which spins off into all these different games and such!
I know that if I ever get lucky to have a child, I am def. going to be buying tons of legos. Honestly, after sitting and writing about them, and recalling the good ole days I am half tempted to buy me a tiny set to play with just for fun 🙂
