So you may have noticed, if you spend much time around the blog or follow me on social media that I have this new found love for meal subscription boxes. Of course I did a review for one a few weeks back, and then I found a code for another, and I have been browsing around and looked at several. One that I found that offered to work with me on a review was Home Chef and I have to say after all my browsing and experience I think I might like it the best of all – I will tell you all about that in my review of course!
Right from the get go these are the things I can tell you that set them apart in my opinion:I liked the menu options, I liked how I got to pick what I wanted, I liked that they had fruit as an option and I think that the portions were very fair and I also liked that the prices seemed pretty fair. I had a $50 credit and with everything I got I still have $10 left!
Signing up for an account is fairly easy, and they have LOTS of options for you to choose from such as number of meals per week, number of servings, dietary information- such as things you want to avoid, and things such as low calorie and low carb. This is so when they auto assign your meals, they leave these things out.. however you are free and clear to go in and pick what meals and options you want- the ones they do are merely suggestions!
One other thing I liked is if you want to plan out your meals/decide when to start your order they allow you to view several weeks in advance- I think up to 3 weeks or so, which is awesome as well. They also have oodles of options including fruit, smoothies, etc.
The neatest thing of all, might have been the fact that they sent a 3 ring binder to keep your recipes in, and hole punch their recipe cards so that you can keep up with your recipes a little bit better! Of course they send you everything you need to make said meal, and they had everything packaged up where it was easy to figure out what went with each meal!
I found that the recipes were easy to follow, they even tell you how many days you should cook each within after you have received the meal kits – which is handy because you don’t want your food spoiling!
First up I chose some FRUIT! When I picked my fruit, it was right before they switched to the spring type fruits so I got the winter fruit basket which for $5.95 of my credit wasn’t a bad deal!Pears, Apples, Orange and Grapefruit! It was all very fresh and very yummy!
Next up I picked out a Sesame Crusted Chicken over butter lettuce salad- this is kind of a upgraded version of something that David and I already eat our own version of. I usually just buy a can of chicken and dump it in some lettuce and buy some random toppings and dressing! This one wasn’t very much more in depth for me- just had to pan fry up some chicken and make a dressing! I really enjoyed the dressing though- and I loved this butter lettuce. I don’t think I had ever had it before- it had a earthy sort of taste and – it even had the roots still on the bottom to make it last longer- I will def. be trying to find that at the store vs bagged lettuce!
The dressing really made this one for me- it was tangy and it was just- mouth watering to me!
Last but certainly not least, I picked out the Argentine Flat Iron Steak-because I LOVE a good steak- I just am not the best at making one! David actually took care of making it while I worked on making the salsa criolla and the potatoes- oh and the garlic aioli – which I couldn’t get David to try! I thought the steaks were too small until after they were done and then paired with everything and it was more than enough food!
I really enjoyed my experience with Home Chef, and I really hope to be able to try out things from them in the future- I overall think the value and portions and quality were amazing! You can get $30 off of your first order with the code INSTACHEF (not an affiliate link or code)
