I always say I have been known for my hair, more than anything else in life! When I was in elementary school I had VERY long hair and of course it was naturally curly and just a hot mess honestly! It was actually long enough I could sit on it! Of course, I was a child of the late 8o’s and early 90’s with a hair stylist mother who had no one else to experiment on as well so.. I had some crazy looks, lets just say!
Luckily I was young, didn’t really care too horribly much and I grew up before social media and digital images were a thing (though, there is some evidence in random pics and school pics/yearbooks). My hair has been used to identify me in a crowd at more than one event, including my high school graduation- and that wasn’t really my choice because I had every intention to use hot rollers to tame it, but my grandma unplugged my rollers for some reason and I had to just wear it natural and hope and pray that it would behave!
Ever since I was out of high school I have learned better ways to style my hair including not only hot rollers, but sponge rollers, straighteners, straightening brushes and all of that good stuff and for the most part I can threaten it into doing the right way (except in really humid/rainy weather.. and sometimes my hair just doesn’t want to play right)!
I love though when I can do something to it like straighten it, loosen the curls, or just have big waves that doesn’t involve heat – which goes back to those old sponge rollers I have. I never have liked them though because they are so small and you end up with a head full and then if you go to sleep on them it is so uncomfortable- it is like sleeping with your head in a big roll of bubble wrap would be (or so I imagine!)
So a while back when I saw on Shark Tank the pitch for The Sleep Styler, I knew they would be something that I would be interested in trying out for sure! So when they sent me a set of both of the ones they have , I was pretty excited to get to try them out – even though I am not that great at rolling my own hair and David isn’t really that great at doing it either- we at least tried 🙂
In case you don’t know, The Sleep Styler are these awesome hair rollers that the core is actually made out of memory foam, and the outside is made out of microfiber that will hold 5x its weight in water.Oh and a good thing to note: you don’t want to use these with a blow dryer because they are not treated with any sort of fire retardant chemicals!
The awesome thing about these sorts of rollers is you can just put them in, and sleep on them (or not if you don’t want to and you can just wear them around the house for a while like I did- I did however try to lay on them and they were super comfy compared to the old school ones). Also , I have always used rollers when my hair is dry but you can actually use these even if your hair is not totally dry- just as long as it is just damp, so that is pretty nice as well.
I figured the best way to talk about these is to just break it into each set and then go from there! Like I say David and I have NOT perfected the art of getting them in the perfect way just yet, but the way we did manage to do it worked quite well- I need to get him to check out the sleep styler tips and tricks page- there are instructions , videos and more! I am also hoping to get my mom to roll my hair for me one of these days so I can try it – and then maybe letting her borrow them and all of that good stuff!
I wasn’t really sure which set of stylers between the 2 to pick because my hair changes at any given moment, and sometimes I do like to just have a loose wavy curl and not be totally straight so I was really happy to be able to get a set of each to be able to go back and forth with!
The Large sleep styler set has about 8 in it -and even for my length and thickness of my hair I only needed to use about 5 or so of them I think it was so that was a welcome change from a whole head full of rollers with the old school ones! The large rollers are for if you would want to more or less straighten your hair vs curl it. I actually did these and then went to my moms and told her we had used the rollers and she said she couldn’t tell that I hadn’t used my straightening brush- so even the crazy way David and I did the rollers it still worked and I didn’t use the brush or straightener to supplement the outcome in any way so that was pretty awesome!
The mini sleep stylers are about half the size I would say, of the large ones. These are the ones that David and I first experimented with because I had been looking through old pics and found a pic of me with my hair all loose curled from a long time ago and I wanted to try to recreate it. The small sleep stylers come in a set of 12 and I didn’t have use maybe but 8 of them so that was nice to not have the head full of rollers feeling for sure. It did give me a pretty decent loose curl too but it was around the time that my hair was needing cut and colored so I didn’t really take a picture of that because I had some big time roots!
Here is a picture of the rollers side by side & a chart that you might find handy about picking which roller you might want to use
I am VERY happy with my The Sleep Styler rollers ! I love that they can be used wet, that I can use them to get loose waves and that I can use them to practically straighten my hair! Oh and the no heat thing is a huge plus. I can’t wait till I get to use them more and get them going the right way too 🙂
