the official gift guide post/page (or both- i have not decided yet) is not live just yet but this will be included there when it is here soon! I have been working on it, but I need to tweak it!
You all probably know by now, if you have been reading the blog for any amount of time- that my favorite reviews generally tend to be those that involve food or kitchen goodies in some way! I don’t consider myself to be a great cook or anything- I mean I do a good job, don’t get me wrong, but when I get the chance to review anything related to the kitchen I get really excited! When I had the chance from Butcher Box to review a box of their premium grass fed meat, I could not say YES fast enough! My only problem was deciding which one of their boxes I wanted!
Choices, Choices!
Butcher Box is a subscription box for meat! You can choose from 5 different boxes:
- Beef,
- Beef & Chicken,
- Chicken & Pork,
- Beef & Pork
- Mixed Box (beef, chicken and pork)
I generally get enough chicken randomly because of various sells and what not,Ya’ll likely know by now I am a weirdo and don’t eat pork (long story!) and it seems like I never have enough beef, so I decided to go with the all beef box- especially with it being summer and we just have got that grill not that long ago for outside too!
More About Butcher Box Beef & what I am used to
I am actually used to my parents having their own cows and then having them butchered-we usually have them up in the fields in southwest virginia where our other house is/ where my grandparents live. We haven’t had any in a couple of years because we haven’t been able to find somewhere to process the meat for su but I know that beef is really awesome- we know where it has been and what it has had to eat, and we know it hasn’t had any hormones and what not.
I don’t think our cows are grass fed exclusively or anything like that- actually my dad and my mom kind of looked at me like I was crazy when I mentioned I was getting grass fed beef and told me I wouldn’t like it – more so my dad than my mom. He said it would be tough. My mom just said it would be different. Granted, I haven’t had our non store bough beef in a while but I do remember it fondly!
I have tried a few cuts of the meat and I thought they were darn tasty too , btw if you were wondering 🙂 And the steak I tried was not tough-I have to remember to tell my dad.
The Beef in butcher box, if you can’t tell from what I already wrote is grass fed, and that actually isn’t that easy to find. The taste is different, the quality is different and it is more healthy for you too. I like knowing what is up with my food, if that makes sense to you. I don’t like eating funky stuff  especially when it comes to meat!
Grass feed beef only makes up about 3 % of the beef that is out there on a high note. I think that making it more readily available with Butcher Box is a great concept!
Contents & Pricing:
What do you get exactly? Well first of all you get between 8-11lbs of meat, which is enough for about 20ish meals. The beef is grass fed, the pork is heritage and the chicken is free range organic. You can also choose to add on different things to your box for an additional fee of course, and the contents of each box change every month as well- though your first months boxes are always the same.
What threw me off at first was that the price was $129 with free shipping(this is the base price for all of the boxes). I kept thinking for that amount of meat it was a little steep However, I am used to buying discounted /reduced meat at the store(Or, also , a lot of times my mom gets deals on meats and then just gives me some of them after the fact!) and not in very high quantities and certain cuts that I can’t really afford most of the time depending on the market.
There are many times that I can’t get any beef at all, or even the particular cut I am looking for because of that. Also, this is grass fed beef so that has an impact as well. When you look at the fact that you will only be paying $6 per meal that isn’t near as shocking or doesn’t seem so bad!

First Month Beef Butcher Box:
The first month you do your butcher box for the beef, you always get the same items listed below, as far as I understand.
2 new york strips @ 10 oz each
2 Beef Stew packs @ 1lb each
1 package of 6 hamburger patties (this was listed on my packing list as 2 bricks @ 1lb so I am not sure why there was a difference)
1 package of premium steak tips @ 1lb
2 Packages of top sirloin- 4 ,6 oz pieces (2 per pouch)
there was also a package of bacon (pork ) at 10 oz. of course, you all know I don’t do pork but I can always let David have it , give it to his dad or even my grandma so it will not go to waste:
Recipe Cards & Cuts Cards:
I had 2 of these cards included in my box- one was about ground beef and one was about the top sirloin. There is also a welcome card, and on the back of the 2 cut card there is a recipe. The cards also have taste profile information and cooking tips & temps!
Packaging (The awesome insulated bag!)
My order arrived perfectly frozen in an insulated cooler with dry ice! It was also inside of an awesome insulated tote bag that I have fell in love with! It is very sizeable, and I have taken to taking it to the store when I go out and about for my frozen goodies :)I know we don’t live that far from the store- especially when you think about my grandma living 45 min from town but.. it does get so darn hot here so I am glad to have it!
Summing it all up!
I have really enjoyed my Butcher box experience! I love getting awesome quality food- especially meat because it is something that I am used to, and it is something that I can use (especially when you are weird like me and only eat chicken or beef !) I also have a thing for subscription boxes, so I am very satisfied with my experience! I recommend that if you are meat person that you check them out!
If you click through the links on this post you will get $10 off and free bacon!
